Alagaësia - Before Galbatorix's Rule
Before the race of Men, and yes, even before the race of Elves, the Dwarves roamed Alagaësia in all of their glory and freedom. However, Alagaësia was not only home to the Dwarves, but to lots of other animals and magical creatures too, including the Dragons.
It wasn't for over a hundred years later that the Elves came to Alagaësia from across the sea, but this was only the beginning. From the very start, the Elves and the Dragons never really got along.
It all began when a foolish young Elf hunted down a Dragon and killed it, thinking of it as mere game. This, however, was a big mistake. Outraged by what happened, the Dragons rebelled and attacked the Elves, starting the beginning of a long and brutal war.
Over time, the conditions of the war did not improve, but worsen, due to the lack of communication between the Elves and the Dragons. This problem was solved when the first Shur'tugal, Eragon, came to be.
Once Eragon's Dragon grew large enough, and Eragon's powers strong enough, they began traveling all over Alagaësia, making peace between the two races. During their travels, they convinced the Elves and the Dragons to form and sign treaties and live in peace with one another.
Because of how useful Eragon the Shur'tugal proved to be, the Dragons gave the Elves two or three eggs a year, which could be hatched to form a new pair of Rider and Dragon. The purpose of this was to keep peace between the Elves and the Dragons, and ensure a way of communication. However, over time the Shur'tugal's power grew, gaining them more power and respect than any King, Queen or Ruler in all of Alagaësia.
This peace lasted for hundreds of years, until a disturbed Rider came into existence, named Galbatorix. After he and his Dragon were ambushed, and his Dragon killed, Galbatorix was driving mad; mad at the thought of revenge. After being denied a new Dragon by the Riders because of obvious psychological issues, Galbatorix was only driven further into madness, beginning another long and bloody war.
Alagaësia - After Galbatorix's Rule
With the help of Morzan, an his other evil Forsworns, Galbatorix killed all the known Shur'tugals... except for one. Vrael, the last and most wise of the Shur'tugals was the only one with the power to defeat Galbatorix. Finally, in the last battle, Galbatorix kicked Vrael in the back of his legs, allowing him to finally kill Vrael on Utgard.
Since that day, Galbatorix has ruled Alagaësia with his sick and twisted black Dragon, Shruikan. His power has never been challenged, until the day Eragon, the farm boy from Carvahall, hatched one of the three remaining Dragon eggs, and brought back a race that Alagaësia hasn't seen for hundreds of years... the Shur'tugals have risen again.
