The race of the dwarves were a strong, powerful race that have ruled in Alagaësia for eight millennia’s from Farthen Dûr without any opposition from the elves or the humans. The dwarves are stout, powerful warriors. Since their reign in Alagaësia in Eragon's time there had been forty-two kings, with Hrothgar as the forty-second, and Korgan as the first. As Ajihad explained to Eragon, the dwarves were and were not, in some ways, a part of the Varden, whom they housed in their mountain of Farthen Dûr. The dwarves not only allowed the Varden to stay in the mountain, but most clans also aided them with their battles against the Empire. There were thirteen dwarf clans, that each have with their own chief. Though the leader of the Varden, Ajihad, was given some dominance over the dwarves, they only ultimately answered to their king, Hrothgar. Not all the clans were very happy about Hrothgar being their king.
Some dwarves were happy when Eragon and Saphira came into their city, but not many. Before the elves and humans came to Alagaësia the dragons had terrorized the dwarves by taking their gold and eating their flocks. There had never been a dwarf Rider so there was bit of enmity between the dwarf race, humans and elves.
In Eldest, Eragon is adopted into Dûrgrimst Ingeitum, Orik and Hrothgar’s clan. This enrages many dwarves, as we see in the dwarf city Tarnag. However, while in Tarnag, Eragon learns much of dwarf culture and religion.
The thirteen dwarf clans vary greatly in terms of customs and rituals. In olden times, feuds were not uncommon between dwarf clans, however after the rise of the Riders feuds dropped in number. The tradition was revived when the clan Dûrgrimst Nagra declared a blood feud against Dûrgrimst Ingeitum after Hrothgar adopted Eragon into the clan. Blood feuds last across generations, until both clans call an end to it. Orik tells Eragon that it was not uncommon for clans to be devastated by a blood feud, and the violence that ensued.
While in Tarnag, Eragon is invited by Grimstborith Gannel to Celbedeil where he learns the dwarf religion and customs. Gannel is a member of Dûrgrimst Quan, the keepers of the religion. Dwarf religion is polytheistic, with the head god being Helzvog, the creator of the Dwarves.
