The Legend
Dragons have no beginning. From what we know, they have always existed. They were the first inhabitants of Alagaesia, except for maybe the Dwarves. And if they have an end, it will be when the world ends, because they perish as the land does. They ruled Alagaesia, proud and full of glory, until the first of the Elves came over.
From the time when a young Elf killed a Dragon, regarding it as only an animal, war raged between the two races. The Dragons grouped up and killed the young Elf, which the Elves did not like. But the attacks didn't stop there. The Dragons, still massed and united, attacked the entire Elven nation. Tired and confused from all of this, the Elves tried to end the war, but could not find a way to communicate with the Dragons.
This long and bloody war lasted 5 years, until an Elf named Eragon found a Dragon's egg. Wanting to raise a friendly Dragon, Eragon hid his hatchling, and raised it in secrecy. Eragon named his Dragon Bid'Daum, in custom of the ancient language. When Bid'Daum was old enough, Eragon and his Dragon would ride together, convincing the Dragons to make peace with the Elves. Finally, treaties were formed between the Elves and the Dragons, ensuring them to live with each other in peace.
To ensure the peace between the two races, and that war would not break out again, the established the Dragon Riders. Over time, Dragon Riders grew from means of communication to the leading rulers of Alagaesia. The spell of the Dragon Riders linked the elves and dragons, and in time the humans together. Through the enchantments, the elves gained immortality, and their fair appearance as well as their strength and proficiency with magic. The dragons gained the use of the ancient language as a form of communication. As the spell has not had as much time to work on humans, the gains have been less noticeable. However, it has tamed mankind greatly. This progress was lost to man after Galbatorix and the twisted dragon Shurikan took control.
About the Dragons
Dragons are hatched from eggs. These eggs, about the size of a fist, are the exact color that the Dragon will be once they hatch. Dragon eggs are very strong, and very smooth. Baby Dragons can live in their eggs for hundreds of years before hatching. A Dragon will only hatch for who they choose. The first person to touch a Dragon destined to become a Rider’s partner becomes its "rider". When the first person touches the Dragon, they are marked in the palm of their hand with a gedwey ignasia, which allows them to not only talk with their Dragon, but cast magic.
When an egg was donated by the Dragons to the Riders, words in the ancient language were said over the egg. This facet of the Rider’s spell allowed the hatchling Dragon to remain in his or her egg until the elf or human destined to be its Rider came into contact with it. At this point, the egg would hatch and be mated with its Rider for life. This is what makes the link between Shurikan and Galbatorix such an abomination. Shurikan never chose Galbatorix as his Rider, in fact, Shurikan’s true Rider was murdered by Galbatorix.
A Dragon never stops growing. Most Dragons can be the size of a house, and even small Dragons have a wingspan of over one hundred feet. They just never stop growing. Some of the ancient Dragons, before they were killed my the Empire, could be mistaken for large hills.
Dragons could not breath fire until the age of five or six months, which is about the age in which they can mate. The older the Dragon is, the longer it can breath fire. Some of the Dragons could keep at it for minutes.
Dragon's scales are very strong and offer protection to them when being attacked. The Dragons' scales show like gems, and come in every color. it was said that a group of Dragons looks like a living rainbow, constantly moving and shimmering.
Dragons live very long life spans, in fact, they live forever, as long as the Dragon's Rider does not die or the Dragon is not killed. Dragons magical power extends the life of their Rider, causing both it and the Rider to live a longer life. Dragons are magical and effect everything around them. Since the Riders were the closest to them, they experienced this the most.
Wild Dragons, those unaffected by the Rider’s spell for the most part, are fierce. They answer to no one but their kin, and will attack on sight more often than not. Female dragons in the wild were so formidable that it was considered an honor among Rider’s dragons to mate with one.

Dragon Eggs
Come across a dragon's egg laying around on the ground? I doubt it. Dragon eggs are very hard to find and very well protected.
Dragon hatchlings can survive for years upon years inside their eggs before they pick their Rider to hatch for. We assume that if they are not hatching for a Rider, they hatch right away, and live with their parent dragon. This, however, has not been confirmed.
Dragons eggs are often described as being oval shaped and beautifully round, beyond human sculpting abilities. The eggs are rock hard, and hollow on the inside, to allow the dragon hatchling space. It is said that not even a diamond can make a scratch on a dragon egg. Don't bother trying to hit it with a hammer, that doesn't work either.
The substance a dragon egg is made out of is always the same color as the dragon. The veins in the dragon egg are also the same substance as the rest of the egg, just a different color.
