Magic. Few know it, but every Dragon Rider could use it. A Dragon Rider's magic is like no other magic. A sorcerer, like a Shade, uses spirits to accomplish his will. A magician's power comes without the aid of spirits or a dragon. Witches and wizards get their power from potions and spells.
Young Riders, like Eragon, were put through a strict regimen designed to strengthen heir bodies and increase their mental control. This regimen continued for many months, occasionally years, until the Riders were deemed responsible enough to handle magic. Up until then, not one student was told of his potential powers. If one of them discovered magic by accident, he or she was immediately taken away for private tutoring. It was very rare for anyone to discover magic on their own.
The students were presented with a series of pointless exercises designed to frustrate them. For example, they were instructed to move piles of stones using only their feet, fill ever draining tubs full of water, and other impossibilities. After a time, they would get infuriated enough to use magic. Most of the time it succeeded.
The language that powers this magic doesn't have a name, well, it does... but no one knows it. It would be a word of incredible power, something by which you could control the entire language and those who use it. People have long searched for it, but no one has ever found it.
To work with magic, you must have a certain innate power. You also have to be able to summon this power at will. Once it is called upon, you have to use it or let it fade away. When you wish to employ the power, you must utter the word or phrase of the ancient language that describes your intent.
The Gedwëy Ignasia
The gedwëy ignasia is a silvery oval-shaped mark on a Shur'tugal's palm which he or she will receive when they first touch a dragon hatchling. This mark is the connection between a dragon and its Rider and is also the proof that a person is in fact a rider. The gedwëy ignasia never goes away, and can be hidden with dirt or dyes to prevent people from noticing the Gedwëy Ignasia.
A Rider focuses all of his power and conveys his magic through their gedwëy ignasia. A gedwëy ignasia is a mark that a Dragon Rider receives when he or she first encounters their dragon. The mark is a bone-white oval shape that shimmers in the light. The first time a Rider touches their dragon, they will develop their gedwëy ignasia. In Eragon, it is described like this:
“Tentatively, he reached out with his right hand and touched its flank. A blast of icy energy surged into his hand and raced up his arm, burning in his veins like liquid fire. He fell back with a wild cry. An iron clang filled his ears, and he heard a soundless scream of rage. Every part of his body seared with pain. He struggled to move, but was unable to. After what seemed like hours, warmth seeped back into his limbs, leaving them tingling. Shivering uncontrollably, he pushed himself upright. His hand was numb, his fingers paralyzed. Alarmed, he watched as the middle of his palm shimmered and formed a diffused white oval. The skin itched and burned like a spider bite.”
From the moment a Rider gets his gedwëy ignasia he is linked to his dragon. Through the powers the link gives them, they can share magic and communicate telepathically. When a Rider and a dragon combine their magic, it is more powerful than ever, allowing the Rider to perform more complex magic.
Gedwëy ignasia means, “shining palm” in the Ancient Language. People call Riders “Argetlam” because of their gedwëy ignasia. Argetlam means “Silver Hand” in the Ancient Language.

Scrying
Scrying - one of the many fascinating abilities a magic users wields. Scrying is a way for someone to check up on someone, something, or a place, that he or she has visited before.
You can only observe people, places, and things that you've already seen or visited. To scry, you must know what you're looking at and where to direct your power. You must know what you're going to scry before you scry it.
Scrying takes up a large amount of someone's magical power and energy, leaving the user tired when they are finished. To scry, you must think of the person or place you're trying to scry, form a solid image of that person or place in your head, and then speak the words from the Ancient Language: Draumr Kópa! Draumr Kópa means "dream stare" in the Ancient Language.
The easiest way to view what you're scrying is to project it onto a reflective surface, such as water or a mirror. Some Riders used to travel all throughout Alagaësia, trying to see as much as humanly possible. This would benefit them if war broke out or an incident occurred that they needed to check up on or watch. They could easily do so by scrying the area that the disturbance was occurring in.
The only known person who can scry in their sleep, or scry someone or something they have never met or seen is Eragon. Eragon scried Arya more than once, each time seeing her and her cell, which he has never seen before...
